We set up OpenStreetMap servers on our clients' hardware, or on machines that we rent for our clients - for example
Apart from classic OpenStreetMap servers, we also do all kinds of other loosely related setups, for example servers that do altitude profiles or serve up custom geodata. For altitude profiles, we use SRTM data or the somewhat improved CGIAR dataset.
When doing OSM server setups, the two most important questions are:
Both factors drive the hardware sizing and also the complexity of the system, and therefore the effort it takes to set things up. It is possible to have multiple services on the same physical machine, but sometimes we also recommend a multi-server setup if more than one service is required. We help our clients choose the right hardware (or the right hosting plan) for the task, and we tailor our software installation to their needs. When done, we prepare a detailed installation document and hand over the server in ready-to-use condition.
We also do fail-over configurations and load-balanced clusters.
Pricing for server setup depends on the amount of time we spend for installation and documentation. A server setup can usually be completed two weeks after receiving the order. A ballpark figure is that setting up a world-wide, daily updated tile server on a suitable (Linux) system will cost about EUR 2,500. Add to that cost for extra time for VPN usage and your cost for renting or operating the hardware. The software we install is always "open source" and doesn't carry any licensing fees.
